Bonsai Moon Gate
The Van Rensburg family is “tree bedonnerd” … Piet Van Rensberg is a tree scientist .The family have a well loved collection of ancient bonsai trees, and his daughter Lindi is an amazing artist and creator of beautiful tree illustrations. So their 3 panel gate in Stellenbosh had to be … “ all about the tree”. I combined the bonsai concept with some of the interesting shapes from Piets Hydroponic plant wall.
“A huge thanks for this piece of art as a front entrance gate. It reflects our philosophy about life, nature and trees perfectly. You added the art to it, executed it in a well-managed project and the final project is stunning and expresses exactly what we envisaged. It is a privilege to have this piece or art in our front garden”‘
– Piet Van Rensburg.
The Blue Bird Gate
Marie wanted a gate that featured the Bluebird. I mixed it up with some Beardsley inspired flowers.

Terri Memorial Gate
The Terri Gate: to celebrate the life of Terri who we lost just before her 21st birthday. Terri is my hero, I loved her for her strength, her smile her love of life and herself, her big and generous heart, her fun nature, all the times she played with Zie and all the lovely poetry and art she made, her voluptuous beauty, and her beautiful soul just like Serene her mothers. The gate features some of Terrie’s art works and is inspired by Niki de Saint Phalle.
Bird Gate for Helen and Alison
I had the great pleasure of sitting on their fabulous stoep with a glass of wine, closely observing the amazing array of birds and wildlife that popped in to visit and that would feature in their gate design. I learnt so much and loved their infectious enthusiasm, appreciation and joy.
“We are absolutely delighted with our gate and all the HARD work and patience that Caroline had to do/have to achieve the wonderful result. We had GREAT FUN working with the “artistic licence” and explaining for example that a Klipspringer is smaller than a Cape Leopard and a Verreaux’s Eagle cannot perch on a thin branch. It is also much admired by our friends and family!” – Helen and Alison, Rooi Els.

Nicky Ryan’s Pine Cone Gate
Nicky is a remarkable interior designer, she wanted to create something truly unique for her incredible house in what has to be one of the world’s best locations. At first, she wanted a design with a strong graphic feel, so the fabulous graphic designer Lourina JansenvanRensburg created some great designs using sacred geometry as inspiration. Nicky consequently did a lot of cut & pasting and the process lead to the final decision of a more hand-drawn approach, based on the pine cone with its all its symbolic representations. The end result was the gates that could not be more perfect for the space.
“Thanks for being super understanding in terms of the design I was hoping to achieve. Your gates look so stunning everyone who comes to the house comments on them!” – Nicky Ryan
“Pringle Bay is Pearly, yes it is very Fynbos,
When you Kreef some ocean air, this is the place, jy weet mos.
Living alongside the birds and baboons,
This is the gateway to living in tune.
Thank you Caroline McDowell, My gate is very WOWell!”
– Bertie Voster
Annelie Maritz Gate
Annelie moved from a large house in Hout Bay into a much smaller space in a retirement village, taking only her most treasured possessions. These provided the inspiration for her gate, while it reflects the harmony of her beautifully curated space.
“It is so wonderful to have something so exciting happen to me at this stage of my life!! My tree gate is a jewel to behold, so stunning and special, I’m so impressed as to how you have included my favourite things, highlighting that which I love in my home. I love its quirkiness. I am delighted.” – Annelie Maritz
Moving 7-Panel Gate
Joan Andrews has a much loved and cared for natural garden on the edge of the forest, she wanted a 7-panel gate design that reflected its beauty. The gate needed to function as a screen, so a more solid design (with backing) was decided on. She has left it galvanised and will decide on a colour at a later stage.
“Thank you, Caroline for making this all come together. It is by far the most beautiful gate in the world. I can’t stop looking at it!” – Joan
Stair Railing inspired by the local fauna and flora of the Cape Fynbos region.

Honoured to be commissioned to make the Shark Gate for Pete Oxford and Renee Bish. Inspired by Pete’s underwater photos (http://peteoxford.com/).
Pete has been represented 10 times in the BBC Wildlife Photographer of the Year awards and was recognised by Outdoor Photographer Magazine as one of the top 40 most influential nature photographers in the world.
Vin Lab is a wine laboratory based in Stellenbosch in the Western Cape. Our brief was to use the icons from the company logo in the design, the gates needed to sit perfectly on top of each other when open and they had to tie in with the existing square grid of the windows.
“I just love the gates, not only are they beautiful, they add value to our business and make us feel safe. Moving Hands listened to our needs and made a gate that was more than that. Our gates tells the story of our business. Excellent and professional service, we could not ask for more!” – Hanneli Smit (Director of Vin Lab)
Waves Gate & Fence
“We commissioned Caroline to create us a gate that would reflect the environment of our new beach house and add beauty to a cottage we love. We were looking more for dog proofing and privacy than security but didn’t have a very clear idea of what exactly we wanted, though we liked the idea of incorporating the sea. The finished product is truly beautiful, tying together the organic and the man-made and creating a bewitching way in to our own little piece of happiness.” – Simon and Gillian Jones
Aloe Gate @ No 60
Cheryl wanted a large exterior gate that included an aloe. The gate stood between two walls that housed my steel art plates, on one side a huge number 60 inspired by Cheryl and Mikes collection of African masks and on the other side, 3 large steel proteas. I set the aloe in a simple geometric shape and combined it with elements from the African inspired number 60.
“Luv Luv Luv my latest gate! Also Tommy has done a FABULOUS job so much care and pride in his work. Thank you. Thank you. We look forward to our next artwork!” – Cheryl De Wit
Gate inspired by archaeologist Mike De Wit’s mask collection that he gathered during his travels in Africa.
“Stunning! The more examples I see of Caroline’s work, the more I want.” – Mike De Wit
Carla Memorial Gate
Gate at Fynbos Enterprises in Pringle Bay. In memory of Carla.
“I have received numerous compliments for these additions to my art collection, and the fact that these pieces are FUNCTIONAL, in an environment where baboon-proof fencing and gates are essential, makes it even more special. My gates are not perceived as “cages” holding intruders out, but as artworks that let nature into my house.” – Ali Croucamp
Ceramic Glazes Gate
Inspired by the beautiful reduction glaze patterns of John the Potter’s plates.
‘Dog is Love’ Gate
“I was one of the first lucky people to have a Caroline McDowell Original Gate in my home, in fact I have three! Each one is a unique and individual design reflecting my love for my favourite things – gardens, birds and dogs.” – Ali Croucamp
Art Nouveau Inspired Gate
“Love my Moving Hands security gate! Beautiful and functional.” – Anneline Sweetnam
Tree of Life Gate
“My security gate isn’t just a functional gate, it’s a customised piece of art. The vision was inspired by my love of nature, life, my celtic heritage and one of my favourite artists, Gustav Klimt. Caroline seamlessly pulled all these elements into one very personal design. Being part of the design process, every step of the way, gives such a sense of it being so personally unique. My gate feels like it belongs, it’s a very special part of my home. I’d describe it utterly as enchanting. The creative design casts magical shadows around the house in different lights, depending on the time of day. It’s simply stunningly beautiful to look at and I love how it changes in different lights, I couldn’t be more delighted with the end result.”
– Alison McDowell
Wynand’s Things Gate
“Caroline succeeded brilliantly in capturing and integrating the eclecticism of the artefacts displayed in my house. The final product has significantly enhanced the artistic and aesthetic feel of my habitat…”
– Wynand Louw

“Caroline has the uncanny ability to successfully translate the robustness of steel into soft, flowing, sensuous and often flamboyant pieces of art that reflect the essence of the dwelling, its inhabitants, interior and environment. Her gates keep on offering artistic delight!”
